Canon EOS 60D

The replacement for the 50D is here: The 60D combines the 18MP CMOS sensor and 1040k dot 3″ LCD from the EOS 550D (Rebel T2i) with the autofocus system from the 50D plus the 7D HD movie capability.

A whole batch of new Canon lenses

Canon has announced a whole batch of new or updated lenses:

  • The worlds first fisheye zoom lens to offer both circular and full frame images: the Canon EF 8-15mm f4 L USM fisheye zoom lens will procduce circular images with a 180 degree angle of view when used at its widest setting on 35mm-format cameras  and images which cover the full sensor area at 15mm. It has marks denoting the widest settings which can be used on APS-C and APS-H format cameras to give full frame images without vignetting.
  • A new affordable L-grade tele: EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM (we will see if it will delivery L grade quality). It has a weatherproof construction, 4 stop image stabilization, a minimum focus distance of 1.2m
  • Updated version: Canon EF 300mm f2.8 L IS II USM
  • Updated version: EF 400mm f2.8L IS II USM. Both the 300mm and the 400mm feature not only a new optical design but also use magnesium alloy and titanium to be lighter than their predecessor.
  • Updated versions currently in development: 500mm F/4L IS II USM and 600mm F/4L IS II USM lenses
  • Updated version: EF Extender 1.4x III and EF Extender 2x III

New Tokina 16-28/2.8 lens for Nikon and Canon

Tokina has announced a new wide zoom lens, the AT.X 16-28 mm /f2.8 PRO FX. They promise a new and quieter AF system with more precise focusing. The pricing is quite ambitious at USD 1400, the lens will be available both for Nikon and Canon DSLRs.

DxOMark 2010 now including lens performance measuresments

DxO Labs announced DxOMark 2010, the new version of its website, adding RAW-based lens performance measurements to its existing database of camera sensor measurements including a lens compare feature. They also propose fifteen scores based on photographic use cases (e.g. travel, portrait) or optical metrics (resolution, distortion).

Sigma confirms Autofocus issues

Sigma UK has confirmed autofocus issues with some recently produced telezoom lenses. Possibly affected are the following lenses:

  • APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM, serial numbers between 10633051 and 10972000
  • APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM, serial numbers between 10574001 and 10972000
  • APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM, serial numbers between 10674301 and 10972000
