Dpreview D3x review: “best image detail on the market”

February 19th, 2009

Dpreview has posted their detailled Nikon D3X review:

“If you can afford the D3X, you will buy yourself the best image detail that’s currently on the market and a very versatile photographic tools. We’ve used it in the studio and on location, for portraits and for sports, in daylight and in dim clubs and and on every occasion we were amazed how easy it was to achieve good results with the camera. Therefore, despite its eye-watering price tag, the Nikon D3X without a shadow of doubt earns itself our highest award.”

Canon presents two new tilt & shift lenses

February 18th, 2009

Canon announced two new tilt and shift lenses, the Ultra-Wide angle TS-E 17mm f/4L and the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, an upgrade to the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L. Probably a reaction to Nikons new TS lenses but a good move for anyone interested in serious architecture photography.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II review

February 14th, 2009

The test team at Dpreview has posted a detailled review of the Canon 5D Mark II:

“The 5D Mark II offers similar resolution to the Alpha 900, increases the sensitivity range to ISO 25,600, and offers high ISO/noise performance that gets close to the Nikon D700/D3. In short it – almost – offers the best of both worlds without costing the earth.
So while the 5D Mark II would never be mistaken as a camera aimed at sports or action photographers (thanks to its rather pedestrian AF performance and overall shooting performance), it balances resolution and high ISO performance very well.”

Nikon interview: more new lenses to come

February 11th, 2009

Dpreview has an interesting interview with Nikon managers, mostly about the new AF-S 35/1.8 but also featuring a few interesting statements:

“It’s about price, size and weight. We wanted this to be a lens for the entry-level. If we’d tried to make an FX 35mm F1.4 it might cost €1400, rather than €200, and we wanted to make sure it was an affordable lens.”

This is not the last lens announcement we’ll be making this year.
